A Safety IV Cannula with Extension Tube is a sterile device designed for the safe and effective venous access for medical procedures including the administration of medications and fluids. It contains a Teflon or polyurethane catheter mounted over a sharp introducer needle with an integrated safety feature to shield the needle, either automatically or manually, after insertion to protect healthcare employees from needle-stick injuries. The flexible extension tube is pre-attached to provide additional length between the cannula and the infusion line so that there is less tension at the insertion site, reduced potential for dislodgement, and improved patient comfort. The safety IV cannula design allows the user easier assembly of various syringes or IV sets into the system and separation if necessary, while still maintaining a closed system to decrease the risk of microbial contamination and increase patient safety and convenience when administering intravenous therapy.
