It is a sterile medical device used to remove air in the case of pneumothorax or fluid, for example, in the case of pleural effusion, blood, chyle or pus when empyema occurs from the intrathoracic space. It is a flexible catheter on a sharp trocar that allows easy access with little trauma to the patient through the chest wall. Once the catheter is in place, the trocar is removed leaving the catheter in place for continued drainage and connection to an underwater seal or suction system. The catheter is manufactured of biocompatible, medical-grade materials that ensure patient comfort and reliability in use.
